Ammonia Cycle

The ammonia cycle is the natural process by which ammonia, a waste product from fish, is transformed into less harmful substances in an aquarium. Fish produce ammonia through their waste and gills. Beneficial bacteria in the tank convert ammonia into nitrite, which is also toxic. Then, another type of bacteria changes nitrite into nitrate, a less harmful compound. Regular water changes remove nitrate, maintaining a healthy environment. This cycle keeps the water safe for fish by continuously breaking down and removing waste products. It’s essential to establish and maintain this cycle for a healthy, balanced aquarium ecosystem.
