American Legation

The American Legation was the first U.S. diplomatic building established outside of North America, originally serving as the U.S. diplomatic mission when Liberia gained independence in the 19th century. Located in Monrovia, it functioned as the official residence and office of the U.S. diplomatic representative, fostering diplomatic relations, trade, and cultural exchange between the U.S. and Liberia. Over time, it has evolved into a historic site and museum, preserving important artifacts and memories of early American diplomatic efforts in West Africa.
