American Congress

The American Congress is the legislative branch of the U.S. government, made up of two chambers: the Senate and the House of Representatives. Its main role is to create, amend, and pass laws that govern the country. Senators serve six-year terms with equal representation (two per state), while Representatives serve two-year terms based on population. Congress also controls government spending, approves treaties and appointments, and checks the executive and judicial branches. It meets in Washington, D.C., and operates through committees that review specific issues before they reach the full chambers for a vote.
