Amatoxins

Amatoxins are toxic compounds produced by certain types of poisonous mushrooms, notably the death cap and destroying angel. They interfere with the body’s ability to produce proteins by blocking an enzyme called RNA polymerase, leading to cell death. This damage primarily affects the liver and kidneys, causing severe illness or death if ingested. Symptoms typically appear hours after consumption and include gastrointestinal discomfort, followed by potential liver failure. Due to their potency, identifying and avoiding these mushrooms is crucial, as amatoxins are highly dangerous and difficult to counter once absorbed.
