ALVINN (Autonomous Land Vehicle In a Neural Network)

ALVINN, which stands for Autonomous Land Vehicle In a Neural Network, is an early artificial intelligence system developed to enable a vehicle to navigate autonomously. Using a neural network—a computational model inspired by the human brain—ALVINN learned to drive by analyzing images from a camera. It was trained on real driving data, allowing it to recognize roads, obstacles, and turns. By adjusting its movement based on the visual input, ALVINN could steer the vehicle in real-world conditions. This project laid foundational work for the development of self-driving cars, showcasing how machine learning can enable autonomous navigation.
