Alveolar Macrophages

Alveolar macrophages are specialized immune cells located in the lungs' tiny air sacs called alveoli. Their primary role is to keep the lungs clean by identifying, engulfing, and destroying inhaled particles like dust, bacteria, and pollutants. This helps prevent infections and maintains healthy lung function. They also play a part in regulating inflammation and guiding immune responses within the lungs. Essentially, alveolar macrophages act as vigilant defenders, constantly surveilling the respiratory environment to keep the lungs clear and safe.
