Alsace-Moselle Concordat
The Alsace-Moselle Concordat is an agreement dating back to 1801 that governs the relationship between the French state and certain churches in the Alsace and Moselle regions. Unlike the rest of France, which is secular and separates church and state, these regions retain special privileges, such as state funding for some religious activities, official recognition of churches, and the ability for religious instruction in public schools. This arrangement reflects historical agreements and local conventions, allowing religious groups to operate with some state support while maintaining their spiritual independence.
