Alphabetic Writing

Alphabetic writing is a system of writing that uses individual letters to represent the basic sounds of a language. Each letter corresponds to a phoneme, which is a unit of sound. This contrasts with other writing systems, like logographic (where symbols represent words or concepts, like Chinese characters) or syllabic (where symbols represent syllables). Alphabetic systems are efficient in conveying spoken language, allowing for a wide variety of words and ideas to be expressed with relatively few symbols. Common examples include the English and Latin alphabets, both fundamental in communication and literacy.
