Alpha variant

The Alpha variant is a version of the COVID-19 virus that was first identified in the UK in late 2020. It has small genetic changes that make it more contagious than earlier versions, meaning it spreads more easily between people. While most symptoms are similar to earlier strains, some studies suggest it may cause slightly more severe illness. Public health measures like vaccination, mask-wearing, and social distancing are effective against it. The Alpha variant was a concern because its increased transmissibility led to faster and larger outbreaks before vaccines were widely available.
