alpha-synuclein
Alpha-synuclein is a protein found naturally in the brain that plays a role in nerve cell function, including communication between neurons. Under normal circumstances, it helps regulate neurotransmitter release and maintains cell health. However, in certain conditions like Parkinson’s disease, alpha-synuclein can misfold and accumulate into clumps called Lewy bodies. These abnormal formations interfere with normal cell activity and can lead to neuron damage or death, contributing to the movement and cognitive problems characteristic of neurodegenerative diseases. Researchers are studying alpha-synuclein to better understand these disorders and develop targeted treatments.
