Alpha Blockers
Alpha blockers are medications that relax certain muscles in blood vessel walls by blocking alpha-adrenergic receptors. This relaxation helps blood vessels widen (dilate), which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow. They’re often used to treat conditions like high blood pressure and benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). By easing the resistance in blood vessels, alpha blockers make it easier for the heart to pump blood and can relieve urinary symptoms associated with prostate enlargement. While effective, they may cause side effects like dizziness or low blood pressure, so they are typically prescribed and monitored by a healthcare professional.
