Alpha (Alpha particles)

Alpha particles are a type of ionizing radiation emitted during certain radioactive decays. They consist of two protons and two neutrons, making them identical to a helium nucleus. Alpha particles are relatively heavy and carry a positive charge. While they can’t penetrate human skin or paper, they can cause damage if ingested or inhaled, because they release energy when interacting with cells, potentially harming tissue and DNA. Due to their limited penetration, alpha particles are mostly a concern internally, in cases of radioactive contamination inside the body.
