alpha-adrenergic blockers

Alpha-adrenergic blockers are medications that relax certain muscles in blood vessel walls by blocking alpha-adrenergic receptors. This action causes blood vessels to widen (dilate), which helps reduce blood pressure and improve blood flow. They are often used to treat conditions like high blood pressure and benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate). By relaxing smooth muscles, these drugs make it easier for blood to circulate and decrease the workload on the heart. Common examples include prazosin and doxazosin. They are generally well-tolerated but may cause side effects such as dizziness or a drop in blood pressure when standing up quickly.
