Almsommer

Almsommer, or "Alm summer," is a traditional period in the Alps during late summer when herders bring their livestock, such as cows and goats, to mountain pastures for grazing. This practice, called transhumance, typically occurs from June to September. It allows animals to access fresh, high-altitude pastures, which helps produce high-quality dairy products like cheese. The movement to and from the peaks is often accompanied by local festivals, showcasing customs and celebrating harvests. Almsommer is an important cultural tradition, reflecting sustainable agricultural practices and the close relationship between communities and their mountain environment.
