Allograft tolerance
Allograft tolerance refers to the immune system's ability to accept a transplanted organ or tissue from another person without attacking it. Normally, the immune system identifies foreign tissues as threats and tries to destroy them. Achieving tolerance means the immune system recognizes the transplant as safe, preventing rejection without the need for lifelong medication. This state can occur naturally or be induced intentionally through treatments that modify immune responses, aiming for a balance where the body accepts the new tissue while still defending against infections and other threats.
