allograft nephropathy

Allograft nephropathy is a condition where a transplanted kidney gradually loses its function over time. It results from the immune system mistakenly attacking the new kidney or from other factors like chronic rejection, blood vessel damage, or ongoing low-level immune responses. This leads to scarring and damage within the kidney tissue, impairing its ability to filter waste from the blood effectively. Regular monitoring and immunosuppressive medications help reduce the risk, but over the long term, allograft nephropathy remains a leading cause of kidney transplant failure.
