Allende's Popular Unity coalition
Allende's Popular Unity was a political coalition in Chile formed in the early 1970s to support President Salvador Allende’s socialist government. It united various left-wing groups, including socialists, communists, and liberals, with the goal of implementing progressive reforms like nationalizing industries and reducing inequality. The coalition sought to achieve social change through democratic processes, but faced strong opposition from conservatives, the military, and foreign interests. Despite efforts, political tensions escalated, culminating in a military coup in 1973 that ended Allende’s presidency and led to a brutal dictatorship.
