Alfonso II of Asturias
Alfonso II of Asturias (c. 759–842) was a significant medieval king in the northern part of what is now Spain. He ruled from 791 until his death in 842 and is best known for consolidating the Christian kingdoms during the early Reconquista, a period when Christian forces were reclaiming territory from Muslim rule. Under his leadership, the kingdom expanded, and he promoted the establishment of churches and monasteries, reinforcing Christianity in the region. Alfonso's reign is also notable for the legendary pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, which became an important religious and cultural symbol in medieval Europe.
