Alexander Fleming was a Scottish pharmacologist and bacteriologist best known for discovering penicillin in 1928. While studying bacteria, he noticed that a mold called Penicillium notatum killed surrounding germs. This groundbreaking discovery led to the development of antibiotics, which have saved countless lives by treating bacterial infections. Fleming's work transformed medicine and is considered one of the greatest advancements in health care. He received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945, sharing the honor with Howard Florey and Ernst Boris Chain, who helped develop penicillin for widespread medical use.
