Alesia (modern-day France)
Alesia was an ancient fortified site in what is now France, primarily known for the decisive Battle of Alesia in 52 BCE. Julius Caesar's Roman forces besieged the Gallic leader Vercingetorix, who occupied the hilltop fortress. The Romans built extensive fortifications, including walls and trenches, to trap Vercingetorix's army inside and fend off Gallic relief forces. The victory at Alesia marked a turning point, effectively ending major resistance in Gaul and establishing Roman dominance. Today, the site is an important archaeological and historical location, illustrating Roman military engineering and Celtic resistance during the conquest of Gaul.
