Alesia (battle)

The Battle of Alesia in 52 BC was a significant encounter during Julius Caesar’s conquest of Gaul (modern France). Caesar's Roman forces faced off against a large Gallic force led by Vercingetorix, who had taken refuge in the fortified town of Alesia. Caesar built extensive fortifications around Alesia to besiege and block the city, while also defending against Gallic reinforcements. Despite fierce fighting and repeated attempts by Vercingetorix to break out or be rescued, Caesar's strategic fortifications and relentless siege ultimately forced the Gauls to surrender. This victory was key in establishing Roman control over Gaul.
