Alcyone (mythology)

Alcyone, in Greek mythology, is one of the Pleiades, the seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione. She is best known for her love story with Ceyx. When Ceyx drowned at sea, the gods pitied Alcyone and transformed her and Ceyx into kingfishers, or "halcyons," symbolizing calm during storms. This myth explains the "halcyon days," a period of peace and tranquility. Alcyone’s story highlights themes of love, loss, and divine intervention, and she is also associated with the night sky as a bright star within the Pleiades cluster.
