alcohol metabolism

Alcohol metabolism primarily occurs in the liver, where enzymes break down alcohol into simpler substances. When you drink, alcohol (ethanol) is first converted into acetaldehyde, a toxic compound, by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. Acetaldehyde is then quickly transformed into acetic acid (vinegar), which is less harmful. Finally, it’s broken down into water and carbon dioxide, which your body can eliminate through urine and breath. This process helps your body clear alcohol, but drinking heavily can overwhelm the system, leading to intoxication and potential health issues.
