Alberta Oil Sands
The Alberta Oil Sands are large deposits of bitumen—a thick, heavy form of crude oil—located in northern Alberta, Canada. Extracting this bitumen involves either underground mining or extracting it from sands using steam and chemicals. Once processed, the bitumen can be refined into products like gasoline and diesel. While the oil sands are a significant energy resource and contribute to Canada's economy, their development raises environmental concerns, including greenhouse gas emissions, land disturbance, and water use. Efforts are ongoing to balance energy needs with environmental protection.
