Albert Woodfox (the Angola Three)
Albert Woodfox was a member of the Angola Three, three African American inmates imprisoned at Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola Prison). They were involved in advocating for prisoners’ rights and gained attention after Woodfox was convicted of killing a guard in 1972—an accusation many believe was unjust and linked to their activism. He spent decades in solitary confinement before his convictions were overturned, highlighting issues of racial injustice and the use of extreme punishment in prisons. His case raised awareness about the treatment of prisoners and the importance of justice reform. Albert Woodfox was released in 2016, after nearly 44 years behind bars.
