Albert Woodfox

Albert Woodfox was an American activist and one of the “Angola Three,” a group of prisoners who were held in Louisiana's Angola Prison. He was convicted of murder in 1972 but asserted his innocence and believed he was targeted because of his activism against prison conditions. Woodfox spent over 43 years in solitary confinement—one of the longest such durations known—before his conviction was overturned in 2016. His case highlighted issues of racial injustice and the ethics of long-term solitary confinement, and he became a symbol of prison reform advocacy. He was released from prison in 2016 and continued speaking out against injustice until his death in 2021.
