Albert Fert

Albert Fert is a French physicist renowned for his groundbreaking work in condensed matter and solid-state physics, particularly in the areas of magnetism and spintronics. In 1988, he discovered giant magnetoresistance (GMR), a phenomenon where the resistance of a material changes dramatically in response to external magnetic fields. This discovery has led to advancements in data storage technology, significantly enhancing the capacity and efficiency of devices like hard drives. Fert's contributions have not only deepened our understanding of magnetic materials but have also paved the way for innovative applications in modern electronics. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2007.
