Alawiyya
Alawiyya, or Aliyya, refers to the followers of the Alawite branch of Shia Islam, primarily found in Syria. They believe in a distinct religious tradition that blends elements of Islam, Christianity, and local customs, emphasizing the divine nature of Ali, the cousin of Prophet Muhammad. Alawis often keep their beliefs private and separate from mainstream Muslim practices. Historically, they have played a significant political role in Syria, especially since the rise of the Assad family. Their faith is considered esoteric, with a focus on spiritual knowledge and inner meaning, making it unique within the broader Islamic community.
