Alawite
Alawite, also known as Alawi or Nusayri, is a religious group originating from Shia Islam, primarily found in Syria. They believe in a unique interpretation of Islam, incorporating elements of Christianity, Gnosticism, and other traditions. Historically, Alawites have faced marginalization but gained political power in Syria, especially through the Assad family. Their practices and beliefs are often kept private, leading to misunderstandings or mistrust from outsiders. While sharing some core Islamic beliefs, they maintain distinct rituals and theological ideas that set them apart from mainstream Sunni or Shia Muslims.
