Alanine transaminase

Alanine transaminase (ALT) is an enzyme found mainly in the liver that plays a key role in amino acid metabolism. It helps convert alanine, an amino acid, into other substances the body needs. When liver cells are damaged or inflamed, ALT is released into the bloodstream, so blood tests measuring ALT levels can indicate liver health. Elevated ALT levels may suggest liver issues such as hepatitis, fatty liver, or other liver conditions. Typically, ALT levels are used alongside other tests to assess liver function and diagnose liver-related problems accurately.
