Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights
The Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR) was an organization founded in 1956 to fight racial segregation and promote civil rights for African Americans in Alabama. It emerged as a local response to the Montgomery Bus Boycott and was led by prominent figures like Dr. Fred Shuttlesworth. The group organized protests, challenged discriminatory laws, and worked to end segregation through nonviolent activism. ACMHR played a significant role in advancing civil rights in Alabama before many of its members helped inspire larger national movements like the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
