Al-Qaeda (terrorist organization)

Al-Qaeda is a militant Islamist organization founded in the late 1980s with the goal of establishing a global Islamic caliphate. It gained international notoriety for orchestrating terrorist attacks, most famously the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States. Al-Qaeda's ideology promotes a strict interpretation of Sunni Islam and opposes Western influence and governments it considers corrupt or oppressive.
