Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb
Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) is a militant Islamist organization active in North Africa, primarily across countries like Algeria, Mali, Niger, and Mauritania. It originated from earlier groups in the 1990s and officially adopted the AQIM name in 2007, aligning with Al-Qaeda’s global network. AQIM seeks to establish Islamic rule through violence and engages in activities like kidnapping, bombings, and insurgencies. It aims to oppose Western influence and support regional Islamist goals. While it has lost some influence, AQIM remains a significant security threat in the Sahara and Sahel regions.
