Akitu

Akitu is an ancient Babylonian New Year festival celebrated around the spring equinox to honor the gods, especially Marduk. It marked the start of the agricultural cycle, symbolizing renewal, rebirth, and divine kingship. The festival included ritual ceremonies, prayers, and re-enactments of mythological stories, emphasizing the importance of order and harmony in society and nature. Akitu also reaffirmed the king’s divine authority and unity among the people. Though it originated over 3,000 years ago, similar themes of renewal and celebration of life continue to influence modern festivals.
