Akazu
The Akazu was a close-knit, influential group within Rwanda's Hutu elite, primarily composed of members from the Tutsi-marginalized royal and aristocratic families. During the 1990s, they played a significant role in shaping political decisions and fostering ethnic tensions that contributed to the Rwandan Genocide. The Akazu operated as a secret power circle, promoting extreme Hutu nationalism and anti-Tutsi sentiments. Their influence helped facilitate violence against Tutsi communities and opposition groups, ultimately contributing to one of the most tragic episodes of the 20th century.
