Akayesu case
The Akayesu case involved Jean-Paul Akayesu, a Rwandan politician, who was tried by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda for roles in the 1994 genocide. He was found guilty of crimes including genocide, murder, and sexual violence, notably for using his position to incite violence against Tutsi people and for failing to stop the atrocities. This case was significant because it was the first time an international court convicted someone for genocide and for crimes of sexual violence, establishing that such acts can be considered genocidal when committed with intent to destroy a group.
