Airway resistance
Airway resistance refers to the opposition the airways (like the windpipes and smaller tubes in the lungs) provide when air moves in and out of the lungs. It's similar to how a narrow or obstructed pipe makes it harder for water to flow through. When the airways are swollen, narrowed, or blocked, resistance increases, making breathing more effortful. Conversely, open and healthy airways allow air to flow easily with less effort. This concept helps in understanding respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD, where airway resistance is elevated, affecting breathing efficiency.
