Airway Remodeling
Airway remodeling refers to long-term structural changes in the airways of the lungs, often seen in conditions like asthma. Over time, the airway walls become thicker due to increased muscle mass, excess mucus production, and fibrosis (scar tissue formation). These changes lead to narrowed airways, making it harder to breathe and causing persistent symptoms. Remodeling is a response to ongoing inflammation and can make asthma symptoms more severe and harder to control, even with medication. Understanding airway remodeling helps in developing treatments that aim to prevent or reverse these structural changes for better respiratory health.
