air-supported structures

Air-supported structures are buildings that are kept upright by maintaining a constant flow of air into their walls and roof, creating a gentle internal pressure that supports the overall shape. They typically consist of a flexible fabric shell reinforced with structural cables or frames, and are held up by fans that continuously supply air. When the fans turn off, the structure deflates. These structures are lightweight, quick to assemble, and used for sports arenas, exhibition halls, or temporary shelters, offering large clear interior spaces without the need for traditional heavy framing.
