Ainu Tattoos

Ainu tattoos are traditional designs worn by the indigenous Ainu people of Japan and Russia, primarily as rites of passage, symbols of social status, or spiritual protection. Women historically received facial tattoos, often around the mouth and cheeks, indicating maturity and tribal identity, while men tattooed their arms and shoulders. These tattoos were created using soot and hand-poked tools, with specific patterns conveying cultural meanings and beliefs.
