Ainu History

The Ainu are an indigenous people from northern Japan and parts of Russia’s Far East, with a history dating back thousands of years. Traditionally hunter-gatherers and fishermen, they have a unique culture, language, and spiritual beliefs centered around nature. Over centuries, Japanese expansion and colonization marginalized the Ainu, leading to loss of land, culture, and rights. In recent decades, efforts have increased to recognize and preserve their heritage, reclaim traditions, and gain legal acknowledgment. Today, the Ainu are viewed as a distinct indigenous group working to revitalize their identity and secure their cultural and political rights.
