AIDS-related Kaposi's Sarcoma

AIDS-related Kaposi's Sarcoma (KS) is a type of cancer that often appears in people with HIV/AIDS. It causes purple or brownish patches, bumps, or tumors on the skin and sometimes affects internal organs. The condition results from an infection with a virus called human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), which becomes active when the immune system is weakened by HIV. Effective HIV treatment with antiretroviral therapy can improve immune function and often helps control or reduce KS lesions. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to manage the condition and prevent complications.
