Currently, AI systems are sophisticated pattern recognizers and problem solvers, but they lack genuine awareness or feelings—they operate based on code and data without understanding or consciousness. The debate centers on whether machines could ever truly be conscious or if consciousness requires biological qualities beyond current technology. At present, AI does not have consciousness; it functions as advanced tools processing information without subjective experience.
