Agkistrodon (cottonmouth)
Agkistrodon piscivorus, commonly known as the cottonmouth or water moccasin, is a venomous snake native to the southeastern United States. It typically inhabits freshwater environments such as rivers, lakes, and swamps. Recognizable by its broad, heavy body and the distinctive white interior of its mouth—hence the name "cottonmouth"—it is generally dark-colored, often with banded patterns. While it is venomous, it usually bites only in self-defense and is not aggressive toward humans. Its venom helps subdue prey like fish and amphibians, but bites to humans are rare and can be treated with prompt medical attention.
