Agion Oros, also known as Mount Athos, is a monastic community on a peninsula in northern Greece. It’s home to 20 Eastern Orthodox monasteries, along with numerous smaller monks’ cells and hermitages. Established over a thousand years ago, it’s a spiritual center known for prayer, religious study, and monastic traditions. The area is semi-autonomous, managed by the Greek government but with its own religious authorities. Access is restricted mostly to male visitors, emphasizing a peaceful, contemplative environment. Agion Oros is recognized for its rich history, spiritual significance, and well-preserved monasteries and natural beauty.
