Age-related swallowing difficulties
Age-related swallowing difficulties, or dysphagia, occur when the muscles and nerves involved in swallowing become weaker or less coordinated over time. This can lead to a slower or less effective swallow, increasing the risk of food or liquids going down the wrong pipe and causing choking or pneumonia. Factors like muscle loss, reduced saliva production, and changes in sensation contribute to these difficulties. While common in older adults, these issues can often be managed with speech therapy, dietary adjustments, or medical guidance to improve safety and comfort during eating and drinking.
