African American publishing
African American publishing refers to the production and distribution of books, magazines, and other written materials by or about African American experiences, history, and culture. Historically, it emerged as a means to share Black voices, challenge stereotypes, and promote representation when mainstream publishers often marginalized or excluded such perspectives. Notable publishers like Johnson Publishing and later independent presses have played key roles in amplifying Black authors and narratives. Today, African American publishing continues to evolve, emphasizing diversity and inclusion, and contributing significantly to American literature, culture, and social dialogue.
