AFP test

An AFP test measures the level of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) in a pregnant woman's blood. AFP is a protein produced mainly by the fetus's liver. Normally, AFP levels can help assess the risk of certain birth defects, such as neural tube defects (like spina bifida) or abdominal wall defects, and evaluate the risk of genetic conditions. The test is typically done between 15 and 20 weeks of pregnancy. Elevated or decreased AFP levels may indicate potential issues, prompting further testing; however, it does not provide a definitive diagnosis.
