AFDC

AFDC, or Aid to Families with Dependent Children, was a U.S. government program established in 1935 to provide financial assistance to low-income families with children. Its goal was to support families lacking sufficient income, helping cover essentials like food, housing, and clothing. The program aimed to promote the well-being of children and reduce poverty. In 1996, AFDC was replaced by the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, which introduced new rules and funding structures to encourage self-sufficiency and employment among recipients.
