The Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (ACIR) was a federal agency established in 1959 to analyze and improve the relationships between different levels of government—such as federal, state, and local. Its goal was to promote better cooperation, coordination, and understanding among these entities, especially as responsibilities and policies became more complex. The ACIR collected data, provided advice, and recommended ways to address issues arising from shared responsibilities. Although it was disbanded in 1996, its work helped shape discussions on governance and intergovernmental relations in the U.S.
